Digital Product

Overview & Problem:
• M&T Bank’s business customers had to visit a branch to open an account. As digital preferences grew, we saw an opportunity to design a seamless self‑service account‑opening experience that exceeded expectations.

This project delivered a delightful, user‑centric digital experience, reduced branch visits, and laid the foundation for future business‑banking innovations.

The moment we solved for our MVP! Focusing on single‑owner businesses for V1 allowed us to launch and learn on schedule.

Competitive Analysis & Exploratory Research:
• Led two half‑day Lean UX workshops with Business Banking SMEs to define problem and hypothesis statements.
• Conducted stakeholder interviews across the organization to surface opportunities, risks, and impacts.
• Mapped the in‑branch journey by opening an incognito account and pinpointing pain points.
• Conducted competitive analysis to reveal informative themes

Discovery & Design:
• Created lo‑fi wireframes in Sketch, focusing on single‑owner businesses for version one.
• Built an InVision prototype and iterated with branch associates, sales teams, and intercepted customers for early feedback.
• Refined flow and content, then transitioned to hi‑fi screens and confirmation email designs.

Development & Evaluative Research:
• Partnered with developers and the product owner to build the application in parallel to design refinements.
• Recruited business‑owner participants through branch networks, email campaigns, and on‑site/off‑site testing using MiFi‑enabled mobile devices.
• Ran final usability tests—“testing the test” pilot session—to capture screen recordings, device views, and participant expressions, uncovering last‑mile interaction bugs.

Launch & Iteration:
• Launched June 2019, then added authorized‑signer functionality previously branch‑only.
• Extended the platform to support a second checking product.
• Currently exploring multi‑owner account opening to broaden the solution.
